Ages 13 to 17
What’s the ConCensus? – Primary Sources Field Trip (Grades 7-12)
Students will learn about enslaved people at Marietta, a former tobacco plantation, using some of the same primary sources historians use today. These primary sources include U.S. Census records, maps, photographs, archaeological fragments, and newspapers from the 1800s and 1900s. The field trip package includes a guided tour engaging students to use art, architecture, archaeology, and documents they discover on the tour and a group problem-solving session using a specific collection of historical and archival documents. In groups, students will share what they have learned about the enslaved families that lived and labored at Marietta through primary sources. The full visit is 95 minutes. Teachers will receive pre-visit and post-visit lesson plans.
Students will identify and examine primary resources, and evaluate the sources of teambuilding skills discussion, and thought-provoking dialogue.
The dates for these field trips will be set between Marietta's staff and the teachers.
