Aviation Museum Teams Up with Smithsonian Channel and Blue Star Families to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing
College Park, MD - Half a century after humanity’s first step on the Moon, the College Park Aviation Museum is hosting a screening of Smithsonian Channel’s THE DAY WE WALKED ON THE MOON, Saturday, July 20. Bring your blankets, chairs, picnic fare, and friends to watch this documentary on the lawn celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing! The film is about one of the most extraordinary 24 hours in history at one of aviation’s greatest historic places! College Park Aviation Museum is honored to be partnering with the Smithsonian Channel and Blue Star Families to offer this Free community celebration of exploration and innovation.
Family activities start at 7:00 p.m. with the film beginning at 7:45pm. Light refreshments will be available for purchase. Reserved seating area and complimentary snacks available for Blue Star Families. No alcoholic beverages are permitted. The screening is rain or shine. In the event of bad weather, the screening will be held inside at the College Park Airport Operations building. The public is strongly encouraged to register so the museum is prepared with ample activity supplies and snacks. This documentary is for all ages; however, it is best suited to ages 12 and up. In the film astronauts, members of Mission Control, and the children of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin reveal their personal stories behind the scenes of the iconic day. Pop culture notables like Queen guitarist and doctor of astrophysics Brian May and television personality and professor of physics Brian Cox describe where they were and what they felt during that “One Small Step.” It’s a story that ranges from the deeply personal to the grand and historic.

The College Park Aviation Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliations member, is owned and operated by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) which also owns the College Park Airport, the oldest continuously operating airport in the world. The museum is open daily from 10 am – 5 pm; admission is $5/adults; $4/seniors (60 or better); $2/children (2 – 18) and under 2 are free. From now until Labor Day, military families (retired, active, veterans, guard) and up to 5 family members receive Free admission to the Aviation Museum and numerous other museums in the area.
