[ARCHIVED] Director Sought For Junior Academy For The Performing Arts

Experienced Youth Theatre Director needed to lead an 11 to 12 week musical theatre intensive program for kids ages 8 to 16. The Junior Academy of the Performing Arts (JAPA) introduces musical theater to students who have a talent and curiosity for the performing arts and strengthens the knowledge and skill level of students already interested in pursuing theatre as a profession. The JAPA Director will be the lead acting instructor, performance director, as well as assist with the overall management of the program. The ideal candidate has a desire to work with kids of all experiences, backgrounds, and talents. Looking for candidates who are dedicated and can grow and build program over several seasons.      


Current program runs on Saturdays from 9 am until 4 pm. Rehearsals are at University of Maryland.  Final shows are TBD. Rehearsals will begin in March 2018. Director will assist with pre-planning and production meetings prior to rehearsal start date.  


Theatre Director Duties:

  • - Plan, organize, and implement a final performance with the participants
  • -Responsible for high-quality staging of the production
  • -Assist with devising and/or writing scripts for final productions when required
  • -Lead the creative team with an overall artistic interpretation of production
  • -Assist with the props, lighting, sound, costumes, and other technical production needs
  • -Create all rehearsal and production schedules
  • Acting Instructor Duties:
  • - Develop and execute engaging theatre curriculum and lessons throughout the rehearsal process
  • -Teach acting technique as it pertains to musical theatre
  • -Collaborate with dance and vocal director to insure the students stay engaged in acting through their song and dance pieces
  • Program Manager Duties:
  • - Communicate with parents/guardians and M-NCPPC supervisors to ensure a safe, secure and customer friendly environment, promoting cooperation and coordinating with all personnel and participants  
  • -Assist in the maintenance of records including participant files, incident/accident reports, attendance, etc.
  • -Assist with sending weekly updates and constant communication to all parents and participants
  • - Maintain program equipment and supplies
  • -Work closely with M-NCPPC supervisors during the pre-planning and day-to-day management processes
  • -Supervise all rehearsals ensuring all M-NCPPC policies and procedures are followed
  • -other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

At least 24 weeks of previous experience as a youth theatre director or children’s art program as an administrator or a supervisor.  Ideal candidate will have at least 1 year in theatre instruction or have a degree in theater education or equivalent field. CPR certification is required.  

Salary: $16-$30/hour, based on experience
