A multi-instrumentalist with Senegalese and Cape Verdean roots, Varre is a Washington, D.C.-born multi-instrumentalist who blends American Soul, Rock, Cuban Salsa, Brazilian Samba, and African genres. He leads the band Sahel, which has performed alongside global artists like Les Nubians and Bombino.

The Legendary Blue Notes featuring Sugar Bear continues the legacy of Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, one of the most popular Philadelphia soul groups of the 1970s. They bring to life such hit songs as “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” “The Love I Lost,” “Bad Luck,” “Wake Up Everybody,” and many other love songs. Come out and enjoy the sounds of The Legendary Blue Notes featuring Sugar Bear.

Do you wish to express yourself more? Are you looking for inspiration? Join us for this three-hour self-expression workshop. Participants will use prompts to discuss and engage creatively with one another and a life coach. Projects will include combining images and objects into a 3-D creation using pictures, paper, and clear gems.

Get your hands dirty working with clay in this immersive workshop. Learn hand-building techniques to create tiles, pinch pots, and more. Then, decorate the surface of your piece by pressing leaves, flowers, and lace into the clay. Show off your resulting creation to your friends and family. Beginners welcome! No experience needed.

Renowned saxophonist Kevin Levi is set to unveil his debut solo project, ATONE, a vibrant fusion of hip hop, R&B, Neo-soul, and ballads infused with his signature melodic flair. Mitchell-Bell’s vocal influences include Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, and Phyllis Hyman.

For thousands of years, music and craftsmanship have been intertwined, serving as a powerful form of communication and self-expression. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll embark on a journey through time, exploring the ancient musical traditions of Central and South America while creating your own unique clay instrument. Reconnect with nature through the tactile experience of working with clay. Awaken your creativity by shaping and designing a traditional rattle. Inspired by Billie Holiday and Donnie Hathaway, MiMi has graced stages from the White House to Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, sharing the spotlight with Jeffrey Osborne, Maysa, and Take 6. With international radio airplay and a new album, Truth and Love, on the way, she’s bringing her artistry to the world. Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of culture, rhythm, and soul.

Learn the ins and outs of preparing your artwork to be shipped. This workshop includes various demonstrations on how to wrap and package your art for transport. Melissa Burley, a Montpelier Arts Center resident artist and professional art handler, will walk you through various steps and processes to ensure your work arrives safely at its destination!

Rakiyah is a beacon of innovation in the music industry, blending R&B, cultural fusion, and storytelling. Before becoming an alternative R&B sensation, she was an aerospace engineer and studied in South Korea, influencing her unique musical style. Inspired by icons like Missy Elliot and Janet Jackson, Rakiyah’s experimental R&B defies boundaries. Her Korean-English song “Like You” showcased her cross-cultural versatility. With her EP Into the Cosmos in 2021, Rakiyah solidified her place in music, blending soulful melodies with thoughtful lyrics. Each song highlights her skill as a vocalist and storyteller, spanning genres and geographies.

Fans hear haunting, subtle hints of Delta bluesmen Son House and Blind Willie Johnson, but Emil creates a unique style by integrating country blues, folk, and bluegrass sounds into his repertoire.

Musical instruments have helped us communicate and express ourselves since the dawn of human culture. Learning about the musical instruments of the ancient Americas and building and playing our own unique instruments helps us to awaken the memory of our connection to nature, cultivate presence through working with clay, and experience joy through sound and music-making. In this hands-on workshop we will learn about ceramic musical instruments that have been made across Central and South America for thousands of years and learn to build and tune our own working clay flutes. Based in Washington, D.C., VERONNEAU draws capacity crowds at major venues like Blues Alley, Strathmore Main Hall, and the Kennedy Center. They headline U.S. festivals such as the Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival, DC Jazz Festival, and Alexandria Jazz Fest, as well as the UK’s Beat Herder festival. Honored with multiple awards, their album Love & Surrender reached the Top 5 and stayed for four months.

Philadelphia’s Ernesto’s Club brings a lively, improvisational sensibility to the Brazilian roots genres of choro and samba. Inspired by the work of Ernesto Nazareth, who could be considered Brazil’s Scott Joplin, the group explores classic 20th-century Brazilian repertoire with piano, drums, bass, and percussion. It features vocalist Fernanda Bravo, who hails from Rio de Janeiro.

Resident artist Bao Yen Nguyen will lead a workshop on image transfers on canvas using acrylic gel medium. Participants will learn to master the gel transfer technique, a process that allows artists to apply photographic imagery and other media to a wide variety of surfaces. All materials will be provided.

A Malian griot and Grammy-nominated musician, Diabate is a master of the n’goni (West African lute). He explores connections between West African and American string traditions, including collaborations with Béla Fleck.

In the three-hour Altered Book Workshop, participants will choose from a list of prompts discussing emotional regulation skills and emotional naming. In response to these prompts, participants will create altered books and engage in discussions with a life coach and each other. Altered books are created by taking thrifted or donated hardback books and upcycling them into an art journal. The participants will prepare the books by strategically removing and/or gluing pages. Next, they will create art within the pages and on the cover. In an altered book, any medium can be used to make any type of art, such as collage, painting, drawing, found poetry, etc. These altered books offer a safe space to use art as an outlet for self-expression and processing emotions.

Band of Roses is a stylistically unique and diverse all-female Jazz/Funk/R&B group from the DMV area. The members of Band of Roses have been singing, performing, and playing in sync as if they’d been together their entire musical careers. Notable members of the group include songstress Carmen Craven and saxophonist Sharon Thomas, who are recognized as some of the best in the DMV. They have won over the hearts of music lovers from all walks of life, performing at some of the most popular venues in the area. Come out and enjoy an evening of soulful entertainment by DMV’s finest, Band of Roses.

Christmastime is here! Montpelier Arts Center and The Eric Byrd Trio celebrate the season with an afternoon filled with festive music from the Peanuts’ special. Comprised of pianist/vocalist Eric Byrd, bassist Bhagwan Khalsa, and drummer Alphonso Young, Jr., the Trio has traveled the world as enthusiastic ambassadors of jazz. Bringing fresh arrangements to these familiar songs will surely put you in a holiday mood.

Learn the art of improvisation, also known as ‘Silly make ‘em ups!’ Excellent for developing social skills, collaboration skills, and communication skills. Practice accepting other people’s ideas and adding some of your own, speaking specially, paying attention to what you are doing, etc. thorough exercises and short form Improv games.

Get On Up is a biographical film that chronicles the life of James Brown, the Godfather of Soul. The movie explores his childhood and his evolution into one of the most influential musicians in history. The film stars an ensemble cast, featuring Chadwick Boseman as Brown, Nelsan Ellis as Bobby Byrd, Dan Aykroyd as Ben Bart, Viola Davis as Susie Brown, Craig Robinson as Maceo Parker, and Octavia Spencer as Aunt Honey.

American Dreaming is a poignant exploration of the complex interplay between pursuing financial freedom and the Black experience in America. This series delves into the nuanced relationship between aspiration and the systemic barriers that persist within our society, particularly emphasizing the American lottery system as a symbol of hope in the Black community.

In honor of Black History Month, musician, author, and lecturer Daryl Davis will present a concert of the Roots of American Popular Music consisting of Blues, Boogie Woogie, Jazz, and Rock’n’Roll composed by Black musicians as performed by The Daryl Davis Trio.

A D.C.-based reggae group that maintains the authentic sound of Rasta Roots Reggae while spreading messages of social consciousness and spiritual wisdom.

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am is an artful and intimate meditation on the legendary Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author that examines her life, her works, and the powerful themes she has confronted throughout her literary career. The documentary collects written and graphic work from the history of Black life in America, seeking to fill in the gaps in the master narrative of American history.

This multi-week class builds upon foundational acting skills, focusing on in-depth exploration of techniques, character development, and performance styles; often including scene work, improvisation, and analysis of dramatic texts. Participants should have a basic understanding of acting techniques and principles that the class will focus on refining and expanding.

This class will run from February 17 – March 24, 2026 on Tuesday evenings, 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Registration will open in mid-November, 2025. Participants must register for the entire class session; there are no drop in rates.

Resident artist Nikki Brooks will lead participants in guided meditation, an art activity, and open conversations about home, neighborhood dynamics, gentrification, and family tradition, sparking deep reflections and meaningful exchanges.

Jewelry is more than adornment—it’s a reflection of history, culture, and identity. This hands-on workshop invites participants to explore the artistry of jewelry-making while connecting with the rich traditions of the Basotho people in Southern Africa. Attendees will gain hands-on experience in crafting unique pieces, while also exploring the historical and cultural significance behind various jewelry designs and materials.

Forever Yours – Tribute To The O’Jays has quickly become one of today’s most outstanding tribute groups. The O’Jays have acknowledged them as a group worthy of carrying on their legacy. The group comprises some of the DMV’s most talented singers. Their renditions of such great hits as “Back Stabbers,” “Love Train,” “For The Love of Money,” and others will take you back to the days of your youth. They have graced the stages of popular local venues such as The Birchmere and Bethesda Blues and Jazz. Come out and get on the “Love Train” with Forever Yours – Tribute To The O’Jays.

Celebrate Women’s History Month and Mardi Gras with D.C.’s Queen of Blues. Join seven-time WAMMIE Award nominee Carly Harvey for a powerful afternoon of music, history, and soul! Known as “D.C.’s Queen of Blues,” Carly blends blues, jazz, soul, and Americana, channeling legends like Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, and Nina Simone. As an African American and Native American artist, she explores the deep connections between blues and Indigenous music, bringing a fresh and dynamic perspective to the stage. Don’t miss this electrifying celebration of culture, heritage, and the spirit of Mardi Gras!

Legendary musician and Washington, D.C., native Ignatius is an artist, songwriter, vocalist, music producer, and renowned drummer whose musical journey spans five decades — and counting! The former lead vocalist of the internationally known funk band Heatwave has also performed with The Stylistics, The Delfonics, RCA recording group Destiny, and The Voices Tribute to Motown.

Roxana is a collage artist fascinated by the art of collage. She uses snippets of magazine paper, fabric, photographs, pencil drawings, raw pigments, and anything that enriches the texture and color of her images. Her goal is for each of her art pieces to awaken feelings in the viewer. Consolation, love, festivity, protection, happiness, innocence, and solitude are words that she has heard others use to describe her collages.

Fences is a 2016 American period drama film directed and co-produced by Denzel Washington from a screenplay by August Wilson, based on his 1985 play. Pianist, composer, arranger, and author Sharp Radway is a protégé of jazz legend Dr. Randy Weston. With deep roots in the church, his debut album of gospel jazz is Hymns and Things. Instrumentalist, vocalist, bandleader, Master of Ceremonies, producer, and Harmony Hall favorite David Wright returns to Harmony Hall with his quartet of award-winning instrumentalists. As a member of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, Wright performed during six Presidential administrations. Wright received his master’s degree in music performance on the bassoon and performed on that instrument in the Concert Band and Chamber Orchestra. His duties also included performing as jazz saxophonist and vocalist with the eight-member White House Dance Band. For his Harmony Hall appearance, Wright will offer stories about each song. A variety of popular musical styles will have you tapping your feet with a smile on your face.

Male a cappella group Heavenly Blessed was formed in Baltimore 28 years ago. The five members blend their voices in perfect harmony to perform gospel-style music that will have you clapping your hands. The group’s current lineup features original founding member Elijah Williams, Larry Chew, Reggie Thomas, Sterling Finch, and Walter Davies.

Hubby Jenkins is a talented multi-instrumentalist who endeavors to share his love and knowledge of old-time American music, following the thread of African American history in traditional music forms. As a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and later Rhiannon Giddens’ band, he has performed worldwide, earning both Grammy and Americana award nominations.

Lion is a 2016 biographical drama film directed by Garth Davis, based on the true story of Saroo Brierley. The film stars Dev Patel, Sunny Pawar, Rooney Mara, David Wenham, and Nicole Kidman. The story follows a five-year-old Indian boy named Saroo who gets lost on a train that takes him thousands of kilometers away from his home and family. After surviving on the streets of Calcutta, he is eventually adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, Saroo, now an adult, embarks on a journey to find his lost family using memories and Google Earth.

Husband-and-wife duo Davey Yarborough and Esther Williams thrill audiences with their soulful jazz and original songwriting. Esther (vocals) has an extensive repertoire in jazz, R&B, pop, and gospel; Davey (saxophone) is an accomplished performer, bandleader, composer, arranger, and educator. They have performed together for decades and co-founded the Washington Jazz Arts Institute.

Experience the rhythm, culture, and soul of D.C.’s blues scene. Sweet Storm delivers soulful, heartfelt blues, blending traditional and contemporary styles. Stormi Weaver (vocals, guitar) and Willie Leebel (vocals, guitar) have performed together at bars, clubs, art openings, and private events for three years. Their collaboration also led to the formation of Stormi and the Blue Skies, a five-piece acoustic group. They met through the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation and call each other music spouses. Celebrate the legacy of Archie Edwards with a powerful blues concert, honoring African American music history and the Piedmont blues tradition.

Rosana is an Argentinian artist that explores Surrealism. She sees the universe as a powerful, vivid place of continual transformation, and her works attempt to capture glimpses of it. Every brushstroke, color, and shape gives insight into her heart and is a window to her soul.
